Chinese New Year mean to you? year after year, from young till now, it has always been an obligatory session of house visiting for me. sure, there were tacky but familiar chinese new year songs playing everywhere during that period, the sweet and sometimes indulgent cookies and new year goodies that satisfy your sweet tooth, the festive was in the air, but never the spirit alive for me. it was never something that i would look forward to, not even the lure of getting red packets from relatives got to me (as it does to many), i mean, it doesnt make much of a difference to me. i rather earn my own money. maybe as a kid, it would mean u can buy your favorite pokemon cards or more tidbits with the extra money, but seriously, whats the big deal about that little bit of cash? hard earned cash is definitely much more meaningful.
everytime that time of the year draws closer, i would dread it. i hate visiting, especially visiting relatives of whom i dont really keep in touch with throughout the entire year, and then u are expected to be all chummy and acting all close and stuff during chinese new year visiting. i have absolutely NO interest in doing that, and neither do i derive ANY form of enjoyment at all. in fact, i HATE it. and then after you go into the house and go round the entire house trying to greet every single person older (or younger) than you (god forbid u miss out anyone older than you), and then find somewhere to sit down, grab some cookies, and pretend to enjoy yourself. it is, i tell you, one of the most boring things to do.
but again, if it were to visit friends and have a nice get together, chit chat, play mahjong, card games, somehow it is more enjoyable.
i hate chinese new year. not because of its tacky music nor its delicious goodies, but just the obligation to visit relatives that you dont really want to. if i could, i might just getaway on a holiday trip. at least that’s money well spent.
